Spotted this in my inbox this morning but was putting off reading it as I knew it would be a tough one. The dichotomy between policy and the lived experience of young trans people in this country only seems to be getting worse. In your mention of Section 28, it reminded me of Blue Jean - have you seen it? Some iffy NE accents in there but worth a watch.

I haven't seen Blue Jean, but you're the second person to mention it to me...so I'll have to look it up!

When I wrote up my interview with Tom Robinson recently it reminded me just how near in the past these bits of structural intolerance are; things we could too easily think are just ancient relics. Section 28 only 2003, homosexuality as mental illness only 1990. This just stinks of the same stuff.

It's plainly, infuriatingly wrong and deliberately so to play to certain groups of voters - the policy ought to be supportive, protective and compassionate.

I don't usually get so irritated about this stuff, usually I can view it with a bit of detachment...but this is about kids. Kids asking questions and feeling at home in the world, I wish we could just make the world a bit nicer for once!
